Erick Widman, Attorney

Erick grew up in northern California and now lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife and three kids.

He attended UCLA and the University of California, Davis for law school. Prior to starting his own law practice in 2007, Erick was in-house counsel at Philips corporation in California for over three years where he handled various international and immigration legal issues. He spent a year teaching international law at the Budapest College of Economics and interned with a Superior Court judge.

Erick has practiced law since 2004 and is a member of both the Oregon and California state bars. Because immigration law is a federal practice area, Erick is able to serve clients in any state in the U.S. and around the world. Erick is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).

Erick and his wife lived in Budapest, Hungary for three years and love to travel whenever possible. He has experienced the daunting immigration and naturalization process firsthand with the marriage of his wife, who is Hungarian. The challenges can seem overwhelming at first but persevering is definitely worth it.

Garmai Gorlorwulu, Legal assistant

Garmai grew up in Upstate New York and Northern California before moving to the Portland Metro area. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was very young, so she has an emotional connection to immigration law.

She attended Stanford University and graduated with a degree in Human Biology with an emphasis in African Conflict, Development, and Health. While at Stanford, she was a resident assistant for two years.

During her summer vacations, Garmai lived and worked abroad in West Africa. She completed internships at U.S. Embassy Accra and U.S. Embassy Dakar. She worked in the consular section assisting the nonimmigrant and immigrant visa staff at both missions.

Garmai intends to head back to higher education in the near future. Still on the fence between a law degree and master's degree in political science or international relations, Garmai likes to keep her mind sharp.

She can frequently be found with a cup of tea and a good podcast or documentary. Working in immigration law has been an eye-opening experience for Garmai, and she feels truly lucky to work in this industry.

Melissa Slotemaker, Legal assistant

Melissa grew up in California and always had a desire to travel and explore. She loved looking at maps from a young age and turned out to be an excellent navigator through the city of Paris at the age of 14.

After attending Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and graduating with a degree in City and Regional Planning, Melissa worked for local government before returning to school to get a graduate degree at Multnomah University in Portland. She loved the city of Portland and the Pacific Northwest and chose to settle here, getting married and working in parks and land use planning for several years.

While Melissa’s kids were young, she focused on volunteering with various community non-profits. She has a passion for engaging faith communities to meet needs within their neighborhoods. She looks forward to traveling with her husband and three children and visiting many of the amazing places our clients are from.
